#Subvert expectations free
It isn't until the very end that the game gets its identity back and that coincides with Raiden being given his own identity and history back, it's almost like the game is trying to break free from the players will which could be why the whole world seems to go batshit insane at this point till the very end. In essence that big follow up of MGS1 you've been wishing for this whole time is just MGS1 with a new setting, new characters and new weapons. Then comes the Big Shell, the big shell switches your main character has you go through the tutorial all over again, and forces you to play a mission which is essentially a copy paste outline with new character of MGS1. Not to mention the tanker mission has a different set up than every other MGS game. MGS2's tanker mission in that respect seems to push the creativity for how the sneaking mechanics in MGS1 get expanded. You go from sneaking in to the tanker to sneaking through the tanker to a boss fight that opens a door into the engine room to a shoot out to one of my favorite scenes in MGS history, the cargohold with all the marines and RAY while you're sneaking and snapping photos. The tanker chapter has diversity in its game play that deviates from MGS1 in a very progressive way. Those figures subvert expectations that crossings typically slow down during the winter but rise in the spring, making it hard to predict whether another. It even has MGS1 references like the Vulcan Raven statue. In may ways the tanker chapter is the idealized follow up to MGS1.

So, how much do you like Kainé? It's one thing to erase your character from the story, but quite another to wipe out your own accomplishments. To subvert expectations, you have to actually subvert them, i.e. For good measure, you'll never again be able to create a profile with the same name.ĭamn. After you've watched your save file get cleared out, it's deleted from the hard drive. But it's what you have to sacrifice that stings - the game goes through the menus one by one, deleting everything you've collected over dozens of hours. What does that mean? Well, in story terms, everyone forgets Nier was ever alive to begin with. You're asked four times to confirm your decision, because you don't just die - you're erased from existence. At the end of your third playthrough, you're given the option to sacrifice the titular hero's life to save an ally, Kainé.
